At CPPG Coaching, we use the “GROW” Coaching model.
What does G.R.O.W. stand for?
Using a structured approach such as the “GROW” Coaching model, allows for these type of conversations to follow a path that is more conducive to successful goal identification. Additionally, it enables the creation of specific actions that Coachee’s (the person being coached) can take to reach the goals they have identified.
Each letter of the “GROW” acronym stands for a different part of this tried and true approach to Coaching. In the section below, we’ll briefly explain these concepts and how we use this model to help our clients “GROW” their careers and themselves.
Goals
Arguably the most important phase within the Coaching process, the goal setting step is where we work with our client’s to ensure that they have a clear understanding of what they are looking to achieve. Having clear goals in mind increases motivation and productivity by giving people a vision of what direction they are looking to take their career and their life, which then sets the tone for and flows through to the subsequent steps in the Coaching process.
Reality
Once our client’s have set some tangible goals, the reality of their current situation in relation to these goals is discussed. That is, how closely aligned are their current circumstances and actions to what they are trying to achieve? Of course, we believe that every goal is possible. However, the trajectory of the Coaching conversation for someone looking to get a promotion slightly above their current pay grade, versus someone looking to completely overhaul their entire career, will likely take different paths.
Options
After setting some goals and reviewing where we are in relation to achieving those goals, a series of potential solutions to successfully obtain our client’s desired outcomes is discussed. There is no limit on the number of options that can be looked at during this phase of the process, it’s more about outlining what can be done and the possible outcomes of these actions, as opposed to choosing the most suitable option(s); this is done in the next step.
Way Forward
The final phase of the Coaching process requires our client’s to select the most suitable option from the items discussed in the previous step. This includes a personal commitment to continuing any useful actions or behaviours that were identified throughout all phases of the Coaching process, as well as sticking to the plan until either the desired goals have been achieved, or new goals have been identified.
Of course, having a structured model or approach does not mean that a rigid set of steps must be followed to achieve career and personal success. At CPPG Coaching, we recognise that life rarely follows a linear path, and support our client’s in the way that is most beneficial for them, regardless of which phase they are at within the “GROW” Coaching process. The role of a Coach is not to pass judgement on someone’s progress or to provide explicit instructions. Rather, a Coach is there to guide people through their self-discovery journey until they are ready to take the necessary steps that they have identified to make the changes they seek.
